The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration takes truck driver drug and alcohol abuse seriously. Commercial truck drivers are held to very strict federal standards regarding the use of narcotics or consumption of alcohol on the road. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) specifically state that no driver may use or be under the influence of alcohol or narcotics within four hours of going on duty or operating a commercial truck. Any driver who violates the alcohol or narcotics rule must be removed from driving for a full twenty-four hours by the truck company. There is no "legal limit" for truck drivers. The law states that any truck driver who appears to be under the influence of an FMCSR-controlled substance, or has any measurable presence in the bloodstream, must be removed from behind the wheel.
